First Presbyterian of Farmington has one of the most active Presbyterian Women (PW) groups in the Detroit Metro area.  We come together to nurture each other, nurture our faith, learn together, grow together and serve together.

Membership: We invite any woman who shares our purpose to join us. We are one of nearly 90 local Presbyterian Women organizations that comprise the Presbyterian Women in the Presbytery of Detroit.  (Read more about PW in the Detroit metro area…)

Our Circles:  There are four PW Bible-Study and Fellowship Circles at First Presbyterian. Find the right one for you.

Mission Matters is our byword.  There’s a place for everyone.

Presbyterian Women Circles

Acts Circle of PResbyterian WOmen at First PResbyterian Farmington

There are six active circles at First Presbyterian.  We hope there is one to accommodate your schedule.  All meet each month (except July and August) and invite new women to visit or join.  All combine fellowship, Bible study, and mission.

 A.C.T.S.

(Action, Commitment, Talent, and Service) Meets: 2nd Tuesday in the Parlor at 9:30 A.M.  Coffee and refreshments are served. A sitter is provided with prior notification for a small fee.

We are a warm, friendly and chatty bunch.  One member recently described her fellow circle members as her “small army of friends” who were there with “hugs, food, support — even tissues” whenever needed.

B.E.T.H.

(Be Ever Thankful to Him) Meets: 2nd Tuesday in Knox Fellowship Hall at 12:00 PM

We take turns being the “hostess”. Everyone brings a sack lunch and the hostess brings dessert and beverage.  We follow the Horizon’s Bible Study, but we also sometimes do a book review or take a field trip.

 DEBORAH

Meets: 2nd Thursday in room 208-210 at 10:00 A.M; Coffee & continental breakfast provided.

We enjoy our Horizon study lessons and have lively discussions on the study topic. We are a caring group of women who support each other along the good and troubled times of life. Our active women are very involved in many church activities.

LYDIA

Named after Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth, one of the first working women mentioned in the Bible (Acts 16:11).Meets: 3rd Tuesday in the parlor at 7:15 PM.  Tea and coffee are provided.

We are a group of caring working women who like to share with each other and support each other.  In addition to using the Horizons Bible Study, we read additional books for discussion.  We occasionally meet for dinner at a restaurant.   We participate in Least Coin, Thank Offering and Birthday Offering, and also provide Christmas gifts to needy senior citizens at the Sanctuary at Mercy Center.

PHOENIX

Meets the 3rd Tuesday evening in various homes at 7:15 p.m. Dessert provided.

We are a diverse group who enjoy each other’s fellowship and support. We are a warm and friendly group joined together for fellowship and study. We are supportive and share both personal and church concerns.

Presbyterian Women’s Mission Opportunities

Mission is our by-word and our heartfelt belief. PW mission opportunities and outreach begin in the individual circles and continue out into the world.

We call this “extra” or “2nd Mile” giving since it goes above and beyond our stewardship commitments to the church.

Our Mission Gathering Women all-over the Detroit area collect items to for mission needs around the world. When the supplies (toiletries, blankets, school kits, first aid kits, etc.) are gathered, we gather too. Many hands make short work of packing things up and delivering them to the distribution centers.

Second Mile Center: We join other Detroit metro PW groups in supporting the Second Mile Center of Detroit, which offers after-school programs, family programs, and individual help to ministries for its surrounding community.

Additional Service and Giving: The individual Circles have initiatives of their own. Some recent circle projects include cooking and serving dinner for S.O.S., weeding and pruning beds around the church, sponsoring a family’s Christmas through Farmington Youth Assistance, providing Christmas gifts to seniors at the Sanctuary at Mercy Center, cooking for Alternatives for Girls, collecting for the Salvation Army’s Bed and Bread program, serving in hunger programs and local food banks. ACTS Circle sponsors a young girl in India through World Vision. Members take turns making the $35 monthly payment to support her.

Leading the Congregation: PW mission opportunities often include the entire congregation. Some of the recent congregation-wide collections we have lead include Sweet Dreamzzz, “Dress for Success” clothing closet at Fort Street Presbyterian, the Hat & Mitten tree (Farmington Goodfellows), Habitat for Humanity, and Neighborhood House.

Supported Missions through Presbyterian Women of PC(USA).

Mission Yearbook for Prayer and Study originated in 1892 can be used as a devotional, guide to intercessory prayers, or journaling guide. It is available in print or online and a Children’s Mission Yearbook is also available. See the Mission Yearbook link to the right to read today’s entry.

Least Coin (An Act of Prayer) We donate our smallest coin(s) in prayer for peace, justice, and reconciliation. Since 1956 this collection of coins from women around the world has been a sign of our oneness in faith and of our quest for peace. Printable prayer cards are available.

Thank Offering is collected each October. At least 40% of the Thank Offering goes to Health Ministries and the balance is used as seed money for new creative areas of mission.

The Birthday Offering is a celebration of the blessings enjoyed by women in the church and often the amount donated reflects the age of the woman giving it.
