What’s New?

Musings with Pastor Bruce

Ah, summer!

School comes to a close. Vacations are lined up. That backyard project you’ve been putting off won’t wait any longer. The a/c is working overtime. We live in the busiest of cultures with both business and busy-ness competing for our time and attention. I’d like to remind, encourage, and exhort you as you pack for the trip of a lifetime or as you sweat pulling weeds and yanking out crab grass to take your faith with you.

Obviously, you can’t tuck your faith into a suitcase or the bottom of the yard waste container. You can, however, in just about any circumstance, in any place remember that you are a child of God, and that God goes with you in your day-to-day life—from its marvelous peaks to the mundane tasks of folding the laundry, running to the grocery store, or emptying the dishwasher.

When you’re running an errand, consider leaving the radio off or the Blue Tooth unconnected and listen to what God might be or has been speaking to you in your life. On your vacation, as you awake each morning, spend time saying thank you to God for life, for safety, for wherever it is you are and however you got there.

Take 15 minutes away from watching the Tigers or a reality show and read from the gospel of Mark or the book of Psalms.

May the Lord bless and keep you; may the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May God give you peace.

Shalom, Pastor Bruce

Traveling Jesus (from the Nurture Ministry Team & Membership Committee)

We may not be able to tuck our faith into a suitcase, as Pastor Bruce said above, but you can take a “Traveling Jesus” with you when you go on vacation this summer or whatever you do. We’ll be providing a pocket-size “Traveling Jesus” to everyone soon. Then let’s share photos of the places we take Jesus on Facebook, in the FYI, with each other for some summer fun! Thank you, Kari Gorman, for this fun idea that will keep Jesus front and center in our lives.

As you can see from the photo on the right, Traveling Jesus was spotted helping with the preparations for the PW Gathering on May 20. Who knows where else we’ll see Jesus this summer …

Jesus said, “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20)

Upcoming Events and Mission Opportunities

Youth United Enters 6th Year

Like the proverbial mustard seed, Karen Linnell’s 2018 spark of an idea for a camp where diverse kids could give back to their community while learning more about each other continues to flower.

This year, with the help of our interfaith partners (adults, teens, laypeople, staff, and clergy from 11 churches, mosques, and synagogues), it will bloom early:

Wednesday, June 26 and Thursday, June 27, 2024

This year, our funding will come from contributions from our partner faith communities, friends, and — fingers crossed — two grants.

Proposed 2024 teen projects include assembling snack packs and birthday celebration kits for area youth; compiling activity bags tailored to support summer learning and memory retention for kids and seniors, who are respective CARES clients; creating art canvases for children in the Oakland County Foster Care system; and miscellaneous beautification and minor building projects for the CARES campus.

We’ll also have a new format for faith discussions where teens can interact with representatives from Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.

How you can help:
Spread the word to any youth who might be interested in taking part in this meaningful experience.

  • Teens entering 6th grade (fall of 2024) to 2024 graduating seniors
  • No faith affiliation needed
  • Free for participants

Teens can register at https://bit.ly/youthunited24 or use this QR code in the image to the right.
Keep Youth United in your prayers. We pray the witness of interfaith teens working together and reaching out to their neighbors help mend our divided world.

Youth United does touch intergenerational and interfaith hearts. However, the planning takes a toll on the small group of lay and staff members of our faith organizations. We pray new people will become invested and involved, ensuring the longevity of this unique program.
Want to help out as an adult mentor? Let co-leaders Karen Linnell or Laura Hedgecock know. We’ll get you a registration link!

You can contact Karen Linnell or Laura Hedgecock with any questions, or you can email us at [email protected].

Additionally, we could use some experienced members to help plan and oversee construction projects. (Adults volunteers, please use bit.ly/yuadult2019 to register).

Brochures are available in the narthex and a pdf flyer can be found at http://bit.ly/YA2019-Flyer. More questions? See Laura Hedgecock or Karen Linnell.

Community Garden Prep and Ice Cream Social (June 2, 1:00-4:00 pm)

It’s that time of year again! Time to get our garden ready to produce veggies this summer!

We’ll be collaborating with DCDI (Danika Community Development Inc) again this year for the Garden and Nutrition Project and the kick-off is Sunday, June 2 with preparing the soil for planting in mid-June. If you would like to help with making our guests feel welcome and/or the ice cream social afterward, please let Sharon Cressman or Colleen Tavor or Tom Neal know. Our goal is to interact with our DCDI guests and provide a warm welcome to our church and our community.

New Member Orientation

Are you looking to take the next step in your faith journey? Or just want to learn more about what the Church of the Open Hands is all about? This is an open invitation for anyone and everyone. You’ll have an opportunity to hear the FPCF story and tell us yours. It’s a special time to get to know each other and learn more about what God is doing in our community. We’d love for you to be a part of it! Please join us for this informative meeting and bring any questions you may have.

FPCF to Host Sarah Towle and Freedom House on June 29th

In combination with Freedom House, FPCF will host a book talk by Sarah Towle, author of the soon-to-be-published “Crossing the Line: Finding America in the Borderlands,” along with a Freedom House discussion in Knox Fellowship Hall on Saturday evening June 29, from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.

Her book charts her journey from outrage to activism to abolition as she exposes, layer by “broken” layer, the global deterrence to detention to deportation complex that is failing everyone — save the profiteers and demagogues who benefit from it.

A freewill offering will be collected for Freedom House, one of the organizations supported by our Mission Ministry. Save the date!

FPCF’s Shopping List for CARES

Have you picked up your copy of the “FPCF’s 2024 CARES Shopping List”? It’s a handy list of the most needed items at CARES. You’ll find paper copies of the list in the pew backs and in a pocket attached to the Mission bulletin board. Help yourself to a list or take more to share with friends and family.

Choose something from each category or pick your favorites. Place your items for donation in the CARES plastic bin in the Narthex or leave them in the Mission Cove. Anything helps. Everything is appreciated.

Happy shopping and sharing in 2024!

An Invitation to Potential Thespians from Presbyterian Players

The calendar says June, but Presbyterian Players are thinking about December. We are currently searching for a script for our annual Christmas play. Before choosing one, we would like to know how many performers are interested in taking part. Are you someone who might like to flex your acting skills on stage? Can you project your voice? Would you enjoy working with a small group of dedicated, cheerful “hams”? Are you free on Monday evenings from late September through mid December? If you might be interested in taking a role, or being an assistant play coordinator, please contact Sue Carlson.

Candles Along the Way – Sharing Our God Moments

“Oh Lord, what do I do now?”

By Jerry Howe

Near the end of Charlie Kinsey’s life, he was very handicapped with Parkinson’s disease. He and Shirley lived in a mobile home in Novi that had a large deck on the front entrance. There were about five steps that Charlie had to go up or down. I decided he needed a handicapped ramp to assist him.

e and Shirley lived in a mobile home in Novi that had a large deck on the front entrance. There were about five steps that Charlie had to go up or down. I decided he needed a handicapped ramp to assist him.

About the time I had this thought Barbara Howe’s son-In-law died and her daughter offered a handicap ramp to the church. I went to the Kinsey’s and asked if they would accept the ramp and of course they said yes. With the help of Lew Cantor we went to pick it up and discovered that it was totally inadequate. On the way home I said a simple silent prayer, “Oh Lord, what do I do now?”

Within a week or so I was scanning through the real estate section of the paper and saw a picture of a house for sale in Detroit that had a handicapped ramp on the front of it. I immediately called the agent and suggested that the house would sell more quickly without the ramp. She agreed and said she would talk to the owner. I proposed that the owner could get a charitable deduction from it and she agreed also.

I got a positive call the following day and about five of us from church picked up the ramp the following weekend.

Within three weeks Charlie was able to get into his house much more easily. The frosting on the cake was that Lew was able to give Charlie an electric wheelchair that had been donated to the Costic Center. Within days he was driving the chair all over the mobile home park, visiting friends he hadn’t seen in months!

Newly Formed Membership Committee Gets Off to a Good Start

As you enter the narthex, you may have noticed the digital screen hanging on the center post as you enter. The digital screen will keep us all informed on what is happening at First Pres, and we hope that you will enjoy the periodic updates and messages. Master Gardener Laurel Scott has taken over caring for the plants in the entire church and already we can see a difference. Thank you, Laurel! We’ll also be creating a welcoming conversation nook in the narthex, and we hope you’ll enjoy that and other changes you’ll see around the church.

Session approved the formation of the new committee that will be a sub-committee of the Nurture Ministry Team, as the two committees often share common goals and can collaborate more strongly together. The new committee is co-chaired by Tom Neal and Colleen Tavor and members include Vicki Najjar, Jeff DeGrasse, Sharon Cressman, Laurel Scott, and Sue Cooper. Responsibilities of the Membership Committee include develop a membership growth plan, oversee the Welcome Center and process in the narthex, attract and orient new members, provide content for outdoor digital sign, make the church appearance warmer and more welcoming, maintain membership records and follow up.

If you are interested in joining the committee, please contact Tom Neal or Colleen Tavor. We meet the first Wednesday of each month at 1:00 p.m. in the Garden Room / Parlor.

We are All Ambassadors for Jesus and Our Church

Our church has always had a reputation for being a friendly and welcoming church. Ask some of the newer members of our church and they all say the same thing about how they came the first time and why they stayed: “Everyone was so warm and friendly,” they all say. “I felt so welcome and like it mattered that I was here.” We have a lot of new visitors in our church these days and we encourage you to reach out to say “hi” and “welcome” to those sitting next to you. You never know how what you say can touch someone’s heart.

Some families have been stopping by too, looking for a church home. Sometimes that means we may hear a baby cry or coo during service or maybe see a toddler walking down the aisle. Oh, we long for the days that we hear a child’s giggle during a service or see a parent comforting a squirming toddler. Let’s open our hearts to warmly welcome families into our church service and let the babies provide beautiful background music with their whimpers or whines. What a beautiful sound, indeed, and a blessing from God!

Music Ministry, CARES Receive Craft Fair Proceeds

Two women at pulpit

Deborah Draper, organizer of the Spring Arts and Crafts Fair, was very happy to present a check for $3,800 to Shari Fiore-Bloom on Day of Pentecost Sunday, May 19. Shari was very surprised and grateful and shared how the funds have been used in the past and will be used again, namely, to bring special music for special occasions, make repairs to the bells, etc. The Waddles Jazz Band will be with us again for Fall Fest and All Saints Sunday and we’ll enjoy other surprises that Shari has in store for us.

In addition, M J Floreno presented Todd Lipa, Executive Director of CARES, with a check for $400, proceeds from the lunch served on Saturday.
Thank you to all who participated in the Arts and Crafts Fair and the bake sale, which allows all of us to hear gifted musicians throughout the year.

Farewell to AV Tech Intern Jaiden Thomas

Jaiden Thomas has relinquished his position at the soundboard as our AV Tech Intern on May 19th. He is graduating from North Farmington High School and will be heading off to college at Michigan State University to study medicine, specializing in neurology.

On Jaiden’s final day at the soundboard, Worship Ministry Team Co-Chair Jim Tubbs presented Jaiden with a $150 gift card for his exemplary service to the church during the past year.

Please welcome Lidia Neathamer, our new AV Tech Intern. She’s another talented North Farmington student and is a great addition to our AV Tech Team. She has been understudying with Jaiden Thomas for several weeks and took over officially on May 26. Watch for more details on Lidia in the next FYI.

PW Spring Gathering Celebrates Farmington’s 200th Birthday

Congregational Information & Concerns

Session Meetings Highlights: May 15, 2024

The FPCF Session met on May 15, 2024. This was the first session meeting with Pastor Bruce Mulder as the Moderator. Treasurer Sue Cooper reported the YTD revenue versus expenses continues to be positive. There were 74 people in attendance at the May 5, 2024, Communion Worship Service.

The following actions were taken by Session during the meeting:
1. The new Membership Committee will be made a sub-committee of the Nurture Ministry Team.
2. The Comm/Tech Committee’s updated Internet Security and Social Media Policy, effective June 19, 2024, was approved.
3. The Baptism of Noah Daniel Piontek, son of Patryk and Kia Piontek, will be held during the Worship Service on Sunday, June 23, 2024.
4. Robert Goldi of Kotz Sangster Attorneys and Counselors at Law was approved to provide corporate legal services upon request.

Pastor Bruce led a discussion on the Proposed Mission Study Timeline dated May 7, 2024, and ideas for the Mission Study Team. Additional details will be communicated as they are available.

Financial Update (April 2024 – June 2024)

Operations wants to give you an update on our year-to-date financial picture. The end of April completes one-third of the year. We can report that our revenue is strong. Expenses are also favorable for this time of year. This is described as “operating in the black.” (More revenue coming in than expenses going out.) A positive picture; but it is also normal for the first part of any given year. We expect expenses to increase as we move through the year. [As an example: snow removal and salting are over for now; a mild winter helped. However, lawncare expenses now return; they are more frequent and for a longer period of time.]

Our investments with Merrill Lynch and Vanguard (Endowment) have seen rises and falls each month. Both investment companies saw significant losses this past month. Fluctuations are normal month-to-month. (You may observe likewise with your personal investments month-to-month.) We ask you to keep your pledges and contributions coming into the church in a timely fashion. Please pay your per capita if you have not done so already. If you have any questions, please see any members of the Operations Committee.

Your Operations Team

Endowment Committee Update

The Endowment Committee is a subcommittee of Operations. We want to give you an update for this committee also. We all are so saddened by the loss of our Endowment Chairman Larry Gage. He truly has been the face and the driving force of this committee. First Presbyterian Church is most appreciative of the many church members and community members who have made donations to the Endowment Fund in Larry’s memory. His legacy will live on.

Sally Kirsten will become the Chair of this committee. Endowment also lost member June Lymperis who passed away last fall. Katie Malisow has agreed to join this committee filling this vacancy. Other committee members include Paul McVey, Tom Neal and Randy Edwards. New Treasurer Sue Cooper will also sit in as an advisor to us. We remind you that donations to the Endowment Fund provide support for both our present activities as well as future mission and ministries.

To quote Dr. Gage: “Believing that giving is an act of faith, an affirmation that all we have and do comes from God, our Endowment has been built by the gifts of faithful members and friends of the church as acts of faith, providing a lasting legacy of faith for future generations.” Larry’s legacy and yours can live on!
Sally Kirsten, Endowment Committee

Please pay your 2024 Per Capita Apportionment

The Presbyterian Church is a “connectional” church where we interact through the Presbytery of Detroit, the Synod of the Covenant and the General Assembly. These councils are funded by the “Per Capita” on each of our active members. For 2024, the Per Capita amount is $36.00. We ask that you contribute $36.00 for each member of your household confirmation age and above to help offset this amount. Checks may be made payable to the First Presbyterian Church of Farmington; please note “Per Capita” on the memo line.

Choir and Bells rehearsals take a break

June 2 is the last day of Choral Bells’ season; they’ll return in September. The Chancel Choir has paused its Thursday rehearsals for the summer but invite you to consider joining Summer Choir. Just show up at 9:15 a.m. on Sundays to run through the hymns and the anthem before we sing at the 10:00 a.m. service. It’s a great way to check out the choir. Please try us out!

Mission Spending January – April 2024

From January – April 2024, the Mission Ministry Team has supported these organizations with almost $6,800. In addition, PW has received half of their 2024 budget.

Year-to-date Mission has spent about 33% of its annual budget.

You, through your generosity, enable us to provide those who are yearning to breathe free with everything they need to begin rebuilding their lives.”

Lighthouse
“Thank you for your generous donation! Your gift of $1,000 will provide help and hope to local families who turn to Lighthouse for support. With your help, we are becoming a beacon of hope for more families in our community. On behalf of Lighthouse and all those we serve, thank you for your generous support. We could not do this important work without you.”

Marion Medical Mission
“Thank you for your gift of $450. Marion Medical Mission will use 100% of your donation as designated. Contacting Pastor Bruce

If you’d like to connect with Pastor Bruce, please use this email: [email protected]. His information is also on the UCD app.

Church Security

Although we’re all eager to be outside and enjoy the warmer weather, be sure to take just a few extra seconds and make certain that doors are locked if you visit the church during off-hours. That includes removing any doorstops, resuming toggle switches to “lock mode” and giving the doors a tug to ensure they’re locked. Thanks for keeping the building and our church staff safe.

On-Call List for Personnel

The Personnel Committee is putting together an on-call list of people who could be available to volunteer to staff the office in the event that all office staff are sick or simultaneously out of the office. Please email Bob Van Hamme and/or Sally Kirsten for more information or to sign up to volunteer.

Need to make a bulletin announcement?

All announcements for the worship bulletin must be turned in the week prior by no later than Tuesday at 12 noon or they will not go in the bulletin until the following week. The announcement request must include the dates in which it should be placed and removed from the bulletin. Font Size: Arial Narrow, Size 14. It is best if the announcements are attached in a Word document with an email.

Additionally, as a reminder, you will need prior approval for inclusion of an activity in the church calendar. Contact the church office at [email protected]  with any questions and/or submissions.

Construction on 11 Mile Road continues to affect church entry

The City of Farmington Hills Department of Public Services continues its reconstruction of Eleven Mile Road between Orchard Lake Road and Farmington Road. Eternal God, you made us in your own image,
and became one of us in Jesus Christ.
Look with compassion on the whole human family;
Take away the arrogance and hatred that infect our hearts;
Break down the walls that separate us;
Unite us in bonds of love; and, through our struggle and confusion,
Work to accomplish your purposes on earth;
So that, in your good time,
We learn to live as brothers and sisters, to serve and love in harmony.
Amen.
